Thousands of years ago in Tretayug there was a king named Sagar. He was a descendant of the Ikshvaku clan, to which Lord Rama also belonged. King Sagar was a powerful king, and his kingdom was large. To demonstrate his power to the world, he conducted a unique ritual known as the Ashwamedha Yagya. In this ceremony a holy horse was let loose, and whatever earth it traversed became his dominion. But Indra, the king of heaven, was afraid that he would lose his power. He therefore stole the horse and put it in the ashram of meditating Sage Kapila.
King Sagar’s sixty thousand sons began hunting for the horse everywhere. When, eventually, they discovered it lying close to Sage Kapila, they suspected the sage of having stolen it. They were a disturbance to his meditation, and they addressed him angrily: the sage was extremely angry and in one fierce glance reduced all sixty thousand to ashes. Their souls could not rest and were suspended without redemption. King Sagar pleaded for redemption with the sage, who replied that no one less than the River Ganges can set their souls at rest.
Thousands of years passed; many kings attempted to get Ganga on Earth but failed. Then arrived King Bhagirath, the courageous descendant of King Sagar. He swore that he would rescue his ancestors. For many years King Bhagirath sat and prayed right on this stone (Bhagirath Shila) to bring the holy River Ganga from heaven to Earth. There he stood upon one leg and fought with rain, snow, storms, and cold winds. He was so earnest that Lord Brahma finally yielded, and Ganga came down to earth. But the force of Ganga was so strong that it would ravage the Earth. So Bhagirath pleaded with Lord Shiva, who snared Ganga in his matted hair to keep her from rushing. And thus, Ganga flowed down and softly touched the Earth for the first time, near Bhagirath Shila.
The ashes of the 60,000 sons had moksha when this holy water came in contact with their remains. From that day Ganga came to be called Bhagirathi—the river that was brought down unto Earth by the penance of Bhagirath.
