Mount Kailash is revered across four traditions. In Hinduism, it is the eternal abode of Lord Shiva, where he is believed to reside with Goddess Parvati. In Tibetan Buddhism, it is Kang Rinpoche, seat of Demchok. In Jainism, it marks the site of liberation for Rishabhanatha, the first Tirthankara. In the Bon tradition, it is considered the soul of Tibet. The mountain’s symmetrical, pyramid-like form — never climbed by anyone — only deepens its mystique.
Lake Mansarovar, lying at its foot, is considered one of the purest bodies of water on Earth. Pilgrims believe a single holy dip can cleanse a lifetime of sins, and many carry its sacred water home. The lake’s mirror-still surface, framed by snow peaks, makes it one of the most visually striking stops on the entire route.
The Parikrama — the 52 km circumambulation of Mount Kailash — is the spiritual heart of the journey. It takes pilgrims past Yam Dwar (the symbolic gateway where worldly attachments are left behind), over Dolma La Pass at 5,630 metres (the most physically demanding stretch)
